Claire Ebendinger

1953

Claire Ebendinger was born on May 5, 1953, in Weyersheim, a commune in the Bas-Rhin department in Alsace in north-eastern France about 15 kilometres north of Strasbourg. She was the middle of five children. In her first eight years she moved three times as her father worked for the customs in border towns with Germany. In 1961 the family moved to Annemasse, a commune in the Haute-Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France close to Geneva. Claire attended Lycee d'Annemasse (high school) and after graduating found a job teaching just outside of Paris at a Montessori School. They gave her on the job training where she worked there for one year. While there she met a teacher who had travelled and this inspired Claire's travel. She wrote letters to Germany and Canada (because of her French) but heard back from Canada first.

In September 1972 Claire arrived in Montreal, Quebec, worked briefly at a Montessori School and then in a centre for people with disabilities. In the summer of 1973 she moved to Lake Cowichan on Vancouver Island and worked for the Lions Easter Seal Camp for the disabled. She found that the island was the place where she wanted to live so at the end of summer she moved to Victoria and took her Early Childhood Education diploma at Camosun College. One of the benefits of being able to speak French was that she was able to find work as an assistant in the French immersion program at Cloverdale School. Over the next few years she took evening and summer classes in teachers training at the University of Victoria. After her 3rd year at UVic, in 1979, she found employment at Quadra School, teaching kindergarten and Learning Assistance in French immersion program. She worked for the next thirty years, mostly part-time to allow her family and personal interests, until retiring in 2009.

In 1973 she married Dave Scandrett and had two children: Shaun (1982) and Katya (1985). Dave and Claire enjoyed canoeing and camping; soon they were out hiking and bushwhacking in Strathcona Park, the West Coast Trail and mountains on the lower island. Her passion for the mountains began while living in Annemasse. Her father never had a car until 1965 and couldn't get the whole family in it for trips. Claire's first memory of the mountains was a hike with her father and sister to the Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval near Samöens, scrambling up rocky outcrops and crossing rushing creeks on the return.

In the mid-seventies, she met Margaret and Ian Brown who had two young girls and they began doing trips up to Strathcona Park and into Mount Albert Edward. Over the years Claire has done many trips with the Brown's both on the island and into the Coast Mountains: Mount Munday, the Manatee Range, the High Stein ridge, and a traverse from Lillooet Lake to Wedgemount Lake Creek. Many of these adventures were also shared with her close friend Gerta Smythe.

At first Claire joined the Victoria Outdoor Club but found they couldn't teach her the alpine skills she needed so in 1989 she joined the Vancouver Island section of the Alpine Club of Canada. Her first three trips were with Rick Eppler, Sandy Briggs and Rob Macdonald (and others) up the Chemainus River Valley. Although the weather was bad each time, she loved those trips and the camaraderie of the other climbers. She realized that she had found in the alpine club what she had been looking for! Claire began going on trips down to Washington State to climb Mount Rainer, Mount St Helens, Mount Baker, Glacier Peak and the Olympic Mountains. On the mainland she participated in trips to Wedge Mountain, Mount Matier and Joffre, Mount Tricouni and the Spearhead Traverse (many trips on ski's which is another of her passions), as well as many ascents of island peaks. She attended the Lake O'Hara summer camp in 2004 but in general didn't like the loose quality of the rock in the Rockies.

In the early 1990's she joined the section executive and in 1992 became the National Representative. This opened her eyes to what was going on across Canada but also how little the Vancouver Island section had to do with the main club and what the main club knew abut the island section. After three years she successfully integrated the local section with the main club and to the point where she felt like they had a common unity. In 1997 Ian Brown stood down as section Chairperson and realizing there wasn't anyone who wanted the position Claire took on the lead. She held that position for four years until 2000 and during that time her goal was to increase the role of women in the section. She wanted woman to not only lead trips but to participate and feel comfortable with trip objectives. At the booth set up by the ACCVI at the Banff Mountain Films she wanted women to be visible and not just men. To this end she was successful and today the section has a healthy number of women who are also leading trips. Another one of her intentions was to involve children in the section activities, which she did by planning a number of family trips (Cathedral Lakes Park, Olympic National Park and Mount Albert Edward), and by welcoming children during the Tele-clinics weekends that she organized with Charles Turner at Mount Washington. Her first trip as a leader, which Sandy Briggs assisted, was into the Mount Alava/Bate area.

Over the years Claire has returned to her roots in Europe visiting friends and family but also hiking and climbing in the Alps. She did a solo Tour of Mont Blanc and climbed Mont Dolent where she could stand with one foot in France, one foot in Italy and "one" in Switzerland, at the same time.

She has twice hiked on Baffin Island (Auyuittuq National Park and Pond Inlet area). She has travelled in Mexico and Guatemala, and spent four months in India with her partner Yves Parizeau, trekking in Ladakh then traveling south in Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujurat, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. In 2009, they spent two months in France and Greece, followed by four months in Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Israel/Palestine and Egypt. In 2010 they went to Nicaragua for six weeks to volunteer on an educational program in Granada.
