The
mid to late 1980's were a period of civil unrest in Strathcona
Provincial Park. During the summer of 1987, Cream Silver Mines
LTD. were given the rights, by the provincial government,
to mineral claims at Cream Lake. In Febraury 1988, a blockade,
organized by the Friends of Strathcona Park, was set up at
the end of Buttle Lake to protest about further mining activities
in Strathcona Park. By the end of the summer 64 people had
been arrested for civil disobedience and a Minister in the
Vander Zalm government was found to be in a 'conflict of interest'.
This was the first time anyone in Canada was arrested for
